The children in the lower elementary class use the grammar boxes in English as a way of further exploring language. Many of the children have already worked with this material in their native language and they are able to use the same material in English. They learn the vocabulary of the nine parts of speech: noun, article, adjective, verb, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction and interjection as well as their functions. They also learn the relationship between the parts of speech and that not every language is the same. Depending on their level of English, they discover that the syntax in English is different with adjectives and nouns, for example. They see that “the blue paper” has a certain word order that is not the same in Spanish or Catalan.
