“Spring’s greatest joy beyond a doubt is when it brings the children out” – Edgar Guest –
Last month, on 20th March, we welcomed the arrival of spring!
In English and PE in the Children’s House, we used the lead-up to the Easter holidays to enjoy a host of sensorial, linguistic, and cultural activities to celebrate this beautiful season.
Montessori is about introducing children to the wonderful world around them through their senses. We explored the beginning of spring and the onset of new life: the buds that turn into blossoms and then into beautiful flowers; the birth of baby animals—from spring lambs to chirping chicks—and the world of insects, from beautiful butterflies to buzzing bees.
In English, the children experienced the wonders of spring by developing their language skills, taking a walk around the school grounds to admire the striking wildflowers, smell the beautiful almond blossoms, and spot new nests being built.
At this age, their absorbent minds give them an amazing capacity for memory games, and we always make English fun! The children made cute memory cards with the new words they had learnt, allowing them to show their families what they had been doing and practise at home.
We like to encourage them to enjoy their work and be proud of it, so they even got to design their own bunny envelope to keep the cards in, complete with a fluffy tail, big ears, and googly eyes!
To top off the week, we also enjoyed the much-loved storybook We’re Going on an Egg Hunt, along with a fun game of spring bingo.
In PE, as well as exploring the school grounds for signs of spring, we burned off some energy with our very own Easter egg hunt and enjoyed classic activities such as the egg-and-spoon race and bunny hop races.
The aim was to come back from the Easter holidays with a spring in our step! We now look forward to a new term, as spring soon becomes summer, the blossoms give way to full blooms, and the world around us grows warmer, brighter, and more alive each day.
